1)  BVS HAPPENINGS

*  Starting September 28 you will see our Boston Vegetarian Food Festival subway ads on the Red and Orange Lines and several bus routes in the city.  (Unfortunately the Green and Blue cars don't carry the size ads we use.)  Here is what the ads look like and let us know if you have a sighting!

*  Please partner with us in publicizing the Festival by putting one of our Festival banners on your website.  Let us know if you do 'cause that makes us really happy.  Banners are here:

*  We know you are eager to see the Speaker lineup.  We are putting the final touch on the roster and it will be posted soon!

*  While we prepare for our own Festival, BVS has been engaged in outreach at other area fairs including environmental, animal protection, and campus events.

*  The bright new design of our Festival website has now been applied to the BVS website.  Take a look:

2) WHALE WARS: THE MOVIE

Our September speaker event was on Labor Day, so our usual 3rd Sunday meeting date is free to see this screening that looks amazing:

Sunday, September 20 at 4 PM -- The film "At the Edge of the World" will screen at the Boston Film Festival at the Kendall Square Landmark Cinema in Cambridge.  Director Dan Stone will be there to introduce the film and to answer questions at the end.

"A documentary crew accompanied 46 international volunteers from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on their third Antarctic campaign to stop Japanese whaling... Directed by Dan Stone to highlight moral as well as legal conflicts, this strikingly humane film may function as a prequel to Animal Planet’s “Whale Wars” but is light years ahead in visual clarity and narrative ambition. Within its ice-encrusted borders, the story evolves naturally — a missing boat, a grinding collision — without the prompting of a narrator. And as we watch a lone Sea Shepherd clinging to the back of a harpooned whale, we understand a resolve that will not quit until the killing ends."  (90 minutes)

3)  IN BROAD STUDY ALL FISH CONTAINED MERCURY; FISH FEEL PAIN; DUCK FEEDS FISH

It is hardly news that fish contains mercury (and PCBs) and that fish feel pain, but two new studies add to the weight of reasons for not eating fish.

* Coal-Fired Fish

E Magazine

“ Mercury is not just in some fish, according to an in-depth study by the U.S. Geological Survey—it’s in all the fish the agency tested. In a first-of-its-kind study, the agency tested fish from 300 streams across the U.S. from 1998 to 2005. Every one of the more than a
thousand fish collected, including bass, trout and catfish, contained mercury. … mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that can cause nervous system damage and learning disabilities in fetuses and small children…”

Underwater Suffering: Do Fish Feel Pain?
A study suggests fish consciously experience discomfort

“Joseph Garner of Purdue University and his colleagues in Norway report that the way goldfish respond to pain shows that these animals do experience pain consciously, rather than simply reacting with a reflex… the new study raises ethical concerns. ‘If we’re going to use animals in experiments, and we’re going to use animals as food, then it is really important to understand the consequences of our actions for those animals,’ Garner says.”
