Come tickle your tofunny bone Saturday night at the vegan comedy show "Tofunny," organized by BVSer Zach Sherwin. Zach has lined up an all vegan cast of stand up comedians, and BVS will be there with an information table. Join in the fun Saturday, May 9 at 6 PM at the Burren, 247 Elm Street in Davis Square, Somerville. Vegan comedy with Myq Kaplan, Jamie Kilstein, Zach Sherwin (aka MC Mr. Napkins), and Rob Crean. Dr. Robert Lawrence, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future at the Bloomberg School of Public Health says, "With the President's notable embrace of healthy food and strong support for environmentally sound policies, reintroducing 'Meatless Mondays' at the White House will demonstrate a great way for Americans to improve their health, while lightening our nation's carbon foot-print." This Earth Day, Thinking Ethically -- Not Just Locally

"...the question of eating ethically involves a lot more than just questioning how many miles our food had to travel to get to our plates. I can�t tell you how many times I�ve heard people proudly say, �I buy local meat,� implying that their meat (or eggs or dairy) didn�t come from a factory farm... But we can�t ignore the thorny issue that factory farms aren�t just �out there� in a faraway land. All factory farms are local to somewhere."

The Omnivore's Rationalization

Interesting essay - Michael Pollan's The Omnivore�s Dilemma, former vegetarians, ethical omnivores...

...Their [�ethical omnivores�] argument � which I call �The Omnivore�s Rationalization� � seems to be that if your meat doesn�t come from a factory farm, then your ethical obligation to the animals stops there and you can happily eat your steak with a clear conscience. Although I understand the intent of this reformist approach, it conveniently sidesteps the fundamental issue of whether we human beings, with the many options available to us, have a right to bring billions of animals into this world with the sole intent of destroying them for a nonessential purpose.
