6) JOHNS HOPKINS SPH CALLS FOR MEATLESS MONDAYS AND STATE DINNERS AT WHITE HOUSE

Dr. Robert Lawrence, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future at the Bloomberg School of Public Health says, "With the President's notable embrace of healthy food and strong support for environmentally sound policies, reintroducing 'Meatless Mondays' at the White House will demonstrate a great way for Americans to improve their health, while lightening our nation's carbon foot-print." Meatless Monday envisions meatless menus and recipes issuing from the White House every Monday, inspiring Americans to cook healthier meals, and the administration providing international leadership by directing the White House Chef to plan and prepare meat-free banquets and state dinners.

7) RAP ARTIST PROMOTES VEGGIE LIFESTYLE

NY1 News 3/08/2009

"As a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, he's known as Masta Killa. And with a stage-name like that, you'd think the rapper born Elgin Turner, who now goes by Jamel Irief, would be a carnivore. But when he isn't in the studio working on his latest solo album, due this spring..., Irief's been spreading another message: ' Go Veg.'"

8) THINKING ETHICALLY -- NOT JUST LOCALLY

This Earth Day, Thinking Ethically -- Not Just Locally
By Paul Shapiro
April 20, 2009

"...the question of eating ethically involves a lot more than just questioning how many miles our food had to travel to get to our plates. I cant tell you how many times Ive heard people proudly say, I buy local meat, implying that their meat (or eggs or dairy) didnt come from a factory farm... But we cant ignore the thorny issue that factory farms arent just out there in a faraway land. All factory farms are local to somewhere."

9) THE OMNIVORE'S RATIONALIZATION

The Omnivore's Rationalization
By Jill Howard-Church
April 10, 2009

Interesting essay - Michael Pollan's The Omnivores Dilemma, former vegetarians, ethical omnivores...

...Their [ethical omnivores] argument which I call The Omnivores Rationalization seems to be that if your meat doesnt come from a factory farm, then your ethical obligation to the animals stops there and you can happily eat your steak with a clear conscience. Although I understand the intent of this reformist approach, it conveniently sidesteps the fundamental issue of whether we human beings, with the many options available to us, have a right to bring billions of animals into this world with the sole intent of destroying them for a nonessential purpose.
