Hello Boston Vegetarian Society,

Lots of news in this issue, with a new vegan cafe to celebrate -- and don't miss the CommonDreams article below (under Newswire) about the Bd. of Ed. hearing for the school teacher fired for teaching about veganism.  Testifying for the defense, T. Colin Campbell, who will speak at our Veg Festival on Nov. 1, has some great quotes about vegan NFL star Tony Gonzalez and other vegan sports figures.

1) NEW VEGAN ORGANIC CAFE OPENS IN MALDEN - VEJ NATURALS

It's a rare pleasure to announce the opening of a new vegan restaurant!  Our old friends Bob and Lisa have merged their considerable talents in cooking and nutrition and have created a menu to delight everyone's fancy.  From a lavish Sunday brunch menu that includes every imaginable delight, to a daily raw special, macro platter, and varied, intriguing entrees, to tempeh reubens and their own vej burger topped with house-made dressings and served with oven fries, this little cafe packs more into a menu than a place ten times its size.  Ingredients are whole, organic, and vegan; prices are modest and service comes with a friendly smile.

I recommend starting the meal with a shot or two of wheat grass juice for a nutrition booster.  And since it will be hard to decide on one dish to order, bring a take-home container and order something for another meal.  The cafe seats 12 people, and is at the site of the former Oak Grove Pizzeria. The pizza
oven will be put to good use for a daily pizza special, vej style.  Fruit and vegetable smoothies and a changing menu of desserts top off the offerings.

2) OTHER LOCAL FOOD TIPS FROM MEMBERS

* Cafe Indigo vegan cakes are now being offered at the Framingham Whole Foods, the result of a letter-writing campaign by locals.  By the slice in the bakery area, and whole cakes can be ordered one week in advance. (Thank you, Veronica!)

* Stan writes, "We have been enjoying some superb vegetarian fare at bargain prices when we come out of the turnstiles from the T red line at Alewife.  'Quick Bite' food stand is right near the Charlie Card machines, offering several very tasty ready-to-eat Indian veg dishes as well as an extremely-generous-sized Indian veg meal from 7 AM to 7 PM Mon-Sat.  The proprietress is vegetarian (but also stocks non-veg items)."

* Original Buddha's Delight in Chinatown plans to change their menu and name to be the same as their sister restaurant (same owners) in Brookline, My Thai Cafe.

3) HOW MANY VEGETARIANS ARE THERE?

* A new Harris Poll commissioned by Vegetarian Times shows that 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian-based diet.  Approximately 0.5 percent, or 1 million, of those are vegans, who consume no animal products at all. In addition, 10 percent of U.S., adults, or 22.8 million people, say they largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet.

* The Vegetarian Resource Group commissions a poll every three years, most recently in 2006, and uses stricter definitions.  See their results:

Plain Dealer (Cleveland Ohio)

"Esselstyn has turned his life's work to demonstrating that heart disease doesn't need to exist in the first place. And if it does, it can be reversed. The remedy is a plant-based diet, he says."

"Healthy lifestyle triggers genetic changes"
"30 men underwent three months of major lifestyle changes, including eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy products...
After the three months, the men had changes in activity in about 500 genes -- including 48 that were turned on and 453 genes that were turned off.  The activity of disease-preventing genes increased while a number of disease-promoting genes, including those involved in prostate cancer and breast cancer, shut down...

"... so often people say, 'Oh, it's all in my genes, what can I do?'  Well, it turns out you may be able to do a lot," says Dr. Dean Ornish.  "'In just three months, I can change hundreds of my genes simply by
changing what I eat and how I live?' That's pretty exciting."

Do food miles matter?
"...it's how food is produced, not how far it is transported, that matters most for global warming... In fact, eating less red meat and dairy can be a more effective way to lower an average U.S. household's
food-related climate footprint than buying local food."    "switching to vegetables one day per week cuts the equivalent of driving 1160 miles per year."

A new Mercy For Animals undercover investigation takes you inside one of California’s largest egg factory farms.  The findings are similar to those documented at numerous egg farms across the country in recent
