Hello BVS listmembers,   In This Issue:

1)  New Vegan Cafe and Market + Veganic Produce Opportunity
2)  International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition
3)  United Poultry Concerns’ Conference

1)  NEW VEGAN CAFE/MARKET & OPPORTUNITY FOR VEGANIC ORGANIC PRODUCE

Lisa and Bob, who are longtime friends of the BVS community, are preparing to open a vegan organic cafe and market in Lynn MA.  Opening is planned for March 2008, so stay tuned!

Lisa has been doing extensive research on sourcing for the produce and products for their new cafe and market.  She has found a farmer who has agreed to grow his organic produce veganically, that is, not using manure or fertilizer containing bone or fish or blood meal, which are typically used in organic produce farming.

The farmer will need a commitment from 50 people to form a CSA in order to proceed.  Members of a CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) buy shares in a farm's output, and receive a certain amount of fresh, locally grown produce every week.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new CSA for veganically produced organic produce!

The drop off point for the produce (you go pick it up) would be in Lynn, and possibly a second drop off point in Boston.  The growing season is usually at least 15 weeks and one share will cost $575.  Here is what you would get weekly:

A bushel and 1/9 size box for each member.  A typical box in mid June might include one herb plant, such as basil sage or thyme, 1 bunch collards, 1 bunch kale, 1 bunch scallions, 1 bunch of radishes, 3 different varieties of lettuce, at least 2 Asian greens such as bok choy or mei quing or chinese cabbage, a broccoli raab, a swiss chard or spinach or beet greens, and snow pea or sugar snap peas.

In late July a box might include all of the above plus summer squash, zucchini, coosa squash, pattipan squash, integrated pest management corn (non GMO), many varieties of tomatoes, 4-6 regular tomatoes and plum tomatoes, cucumbers, many varieties, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, green, purple,  and yellow snap beans, culinary herbs, mesclun mix.  As the season progresses, melons and a variety of colored  peppers will be added by August.

Lisa would be the coordinator, and once she clarifies that there are enough people, you can arrange payment.  You may wish to find a friend to split a share with you.

If interested, reply to info@BostonVeg.org and give your contact information, and I will pass along to Lisa.  Also, please pass this to others since a minimum of 50 are needed to make this ground-breaking CSA happen!
