1) BOSTON VEGETARIAN FOOD FESTIVAL UPDATES!

Just three weeks from this Saturday, on Oct. 20, our 12th Annual Boston Vegetarian Food Festival will fill the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center with foods, products, and services that promote veggie living and help make it fun, delicious, and easy, as well as meaningful and satisfying.

** Look at our roster of top national speakers from CA, OR, FL, ME, MD, and DC, who will converge at food fest and share their expertise: http://www.bostonveg.org/foodfest/speakers.html

** Help us publicize the Festival! An important goal of the Fest is to draw in non-vegetarians to learn the whys and hows of veg*n living. Also, to surround aspiring veg*ns with the support they may need to flourish.

We've got a striking new design for the '07 flyer and leaflet (thank you, Marie!) so please print and post at health food stores, your gym, school, library, workplace, etc. Color or B & W. http://www.bostonveg.org/foodfest/flyers.html

We've added a brand new, sweet banner, so choose one to add to any website you run: http://www.bostonveg.org/banners/index.html

** VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. The Fest is organized and run entirely by volunteer labor and talent. Be a part of our team that makes this event happen (Hit Reply)! No special skills required, as there are a wide variety of tasks to be done. But do tell us if you have skills in these areas:

Audio/Visual equipment
Electrical work
A passion for recycling
Working with children (kids' crafts and activities)

** Another volunteer need: BVS has an exhibitor booth at the Spirit of Change Expo this Friday night and Saturday (9/28-29) in Sturbridge MA. We would like to bring vegetarian information to the audience of this holistic expo. Please hit Reply with your availability if you can help staff our booth for a shift.

2) CONFERENCE FOR STUDENT ANIMAL ADVOCATES THIS SATURDAY, CAMBRIDGE

"Take Action" Student Conference for Animals Saturday, September 29, 2007 Harvard University, Cambridge

There is still time to sign up! Students from across the Northeast will gather at Harvard for peta2's Take Action conference—a day packed with workshops covering topics from starting a student animal rights group and making your campus more animal-friendly to dealing with unsupportive friends and family. Sign up now, and meet other caring students who want to make this a better world for animals! http://www.peta2.com/TAKECHARGE/t-studentconference.asp

BVS is providing the conference with our Guide to Veg*n Restaurants and flyers for the food festival.

3) FUN AND FASHION WITH COM/PASSION

At our Festival on Oct. 20 we'll have many fun new exhibitors, including a maker of vegan baseball gloves, and a new company devoted to making available fashionable and affordable animal-friendly women's dress shoes!

Following up on our Sept. speaker on "Fashion with Com/Passion," here is an article on "the rise of cheap chic, trendy designer knockoffs" that offer "more options than ever for vegans to find trendy shoes and accessories." The article recommends stores and websites for vegan fashion.

News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) "Style goes vegan; New materials and cheap chic mean those who avoid animal products have better choices." http://www.newsobserver.com/976/story/564665.html

It's worth repeating here for newcomers to our list this relevant item from the 6/7/07 BVS eNews:

Leather: An Environmental Nightmare

"It’s an odd irony, isn't it? You think of leather or fur and you think “natural product.” You think of faux fur or faux leather and you think “unnatural,” or even “petrochemical.” But once you investigate what goes into creating this “natural” (dead) product, whether you're talking about fur or leather, you're talking environmental nightmare that far outpaces the synthetic alternatives. 4) DR. SPOCK'S ADVICE ON CHILDREN'S DIET STANDS UP

Another gem from the Raleigh NC News & Observer (6/14/07)

Spock's advice on children's diet stands up

"An old standby on child-rearing - Dr. Benjamin Spock's "Baby and Child Care," the seventh edition of which was published in 1998, tells it like it still is.

Despite the science that affirms plant-based diets as optimal for humans and other primates, a vegetarian eating style is outside mainstream American culture and at odds with the economic and political forces that sustain it. In what he knew would be the last edition of his classic, Spock was determined to make explicit the advice he believed passionately." 5) NEW VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT OPENS

Good things come and go, so it's especially nice when a good thing goes -- and then comes back again! Such is the case for Tofu a Go-Go!, Provincetown's landmark vegetarian restaurant for a decade, that closed a year ago. Owners moved to western MA, searched for a new location, renovated it into a vibrant cafe, and opened on Sept. 27. Noting that their lush, richly varied menu has some items with cheese options, owner Star writes us, "We like to think of ourselves as a Vegan Restaurant that has cheese."

Their hours will be evolving so call before going, but do go and support them if you are out that way! Star reminds us, "We are just 90 minutes from Boston on Route 2. That is much closer than P-town."

I hope something here has been useful to you! Remember to volunteer for food fest!
