2) MEMBER OF DUTCH PARLIAMENT JOINS BVS FOR DINING OUT

BVS was honored to have Dutch Member of Parliament Esther Ouwehand and her Policy Officer Charlot de Waal join us at last week's Dining Out at Sabra. They briefly addressed our group about their work in Parliament as representatives of the Party for the Animals, which for the last two years has been the fastest growing political party in the Netherlands! Esther is one of 2 MP's holding a seat in their 150 member Parliament (comparable to our House of Representatives). The Party for the Animals also has one seat in the Senate (75 members) and one seat each in 9 of the 12 Provincial houses, except in the Province of North-Holland were they have 2.

Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) Starts Serving Cage-Free Shell Eggs

Congratulations to Harvard activist students! On May 7, 2007, Harvard began serving cage-free shell eggs, which represent about a quarter of HUDS' total egg use. Their liquid eggs (for omelets, etc.) still come from caged hens.

"HUDS' decision comes on the heels of a campaign begun last November by Harvard students urging the University to stop purchasing eggs from caged hens. A core group of about 10 to 15 spearheaded the effort and circulated an anti-caged eggs petition signed by over 1,000 students..." Full article: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=518668

* Getting hens out of cages is a welfare improvement; it should be remembered that many other cruelties remain as intrinsic to the egg industry: killing of male baby chicks at hatcheries by crushing or suffocation; beak searing, a painful mutilation; forced molting by food restrictions; early death when egg productivity wanes; rough handling and long distance transport without food or water to the horror of the slaughterhouse.

* There are now numerous egg labeling claims - organic, free-range, cage-free, certified humane, etc. This article helps sort them out: A Brief Guide to Egg Carton Labels and Their Relevance to Animal Welfare
