Dear Boston Vegetarian Society List,

A big thank you to all who supported our recent Boston Vegetarian Food Festival in any way!

Most of all, THANK YOU to our wonderful VOLUNTEERS!! Without you, the event could not happen, and all of us on the Organizing Committee appreciate your willing and capable contribution to the great success of this event. We feel it was one of the best ever, and the feedback has been amazing.

In this issue:
1) BVS News
2) New from Dr. Greger
3 ) Nutrition Q & A
4) Restaurant News!

1) BVS NEWS

Maybe it's the buzz around food fest, but we're getting calls almost every day from students doing papers on vegetarianism! One student was assigned to write about a group working to promote nonviolence, and chose BVS, making the link to nonviolence to animals.

Today we had a call from Indonesian Radio for a story about vegetarianism among teens to be broadcast in Indonesia. Today's Washington Post has a story on the rise of veg teens on the front of the Health section:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/30/AR2006103 001013.html

Last week we did tabling at Boston College's Harvest Environmental Festival.

2) NEW FROM DR. GREGER

If you missed vegan MD Michael Greger's fabulous new talk on Bird Flu and other infectious diseases at the food festival, he has just put his entire new book, free and full text, online!
http://www.BirdFluBook.org

"I think it's the best--and most important--work of my life," says Dr. Greger. We who know Michael say that with his lifetime of standout achievement, this is saying a lot.

You can order the book for holiday gifts at
http://www.HumaneSocietyPress.org
. Michael gives all his book sale proceeds to charity.

3) NUTRITION Q & A:

All the nutrition questions you've wanted to ask and some you've never imagined are answered by BVS' Nutrition Consultant, Dina Aronson, MS, RD. Read her clear and comprehensive responses, and submit your own questions here:

Dina's nutrition answers are featured every month in the excellent online VegFamily Magazine, dedicated to raising vegan children, vegan pregnancies, and veg family life:

And since it's not linked from the home page, here's their page for Teens:

4) RESTAURANT NEWS

As of today, Buddha's Delight, Too! in Brookline is closed, and will re-open (if all goes well with renovations) this Friday with a new name and new cuisine: My Thai Vegetarian Cafe and Bubble Tea Bistro. My Thai Cafe will serve flavorful vegan Thai cuisine, and the adjoining Bistro will serve vegan sandwiches and a multitude of hot and cold beverages. Same management, same location at 404 Harvard Street, Brookline (Green Line Coolidge Corner stop). Their sister location Original Buddha's Delight at 3 Beach St. (2nd fl.) Chinatown will continue with their pan-Asian menu.

BVS will have our Vegan Thanksgiving at this new location, and we've worked out a stunning menu that combines holiday traditions of pumpkin and butternut squash with exotic Thai cuisine. You'll see details posted shortly!

Closings: One of our popular Dining Out locations for Mediterranean foods, Olive Branch in Arlington, has closed. Owner Mike has opened a convenience store in downtown Boston and has his hands full.

Melanie's Vegan Eden in Providence RI has closed. The long hours and demands of running a restaurant were more than Melanie is able to continue, but it was great while it lasted!

Be a Zagat restaurant reviewer! Zagat contacted BVS and invited y'all to weigh in on your favorite restaurants in Greater Boston, Cape Cod, and the Islands. In return, they will send you a free copy of the new book. Here's a chance to show our appreciation for the vegetarian restaurants who work so hard and whom we want to stay in business!

The survey ends on Nov. 16. Vote online at
